Karl Rove-Short On Logic And Stuck On Stupid

So what's happened to Rove's political acumen since SOTU 2005, at what was surely the most glorious apex of Rove's career?

A clearly incompetent hack kept the Presidency

The GOP actually picked up seats in the House & Senate as well

The President was flush with "political capital" and would go about the task of demoslishing as much of the social safety net as possible

Oh, that's right, here's what happened to BitchSlap Dear Leader, Rove and the GOP national leadership

Iraq, Social Security Reform, Katrina hits & W stays on vacation, Terri Schiavo, Jack Abramoff, Other Ethical Scandals galore, Medicare part D implementation, rising gas prices and constant foreign policy challenges from more countries than ever

And all this is brought up to give some context to an appearance Rove put in today

Rove Blames Iraq War for Low Bush Numbers

Presidential adviser Karl Rove blamed the war in Iraq on Monday for dragging down President Bush's job approval ratings in public opinion polls. "People like this president," Rove said. "They're just sour right now on the war."

Karl, Karl, Karl, now why would the public be "sour" on the war, just because troops were deliberately sent into battle without enough effective body & vehicle armor, because Halliburton has richly profited off of no-bid, no oversight contracts which in turn provided the US troops with tainted food & water, because a formerly secular nation is en route to turning into the Taliban II especially as it relates to women's long-established rights being cut back in the now theological govt in charge of Iraq?

Wow, maybe trying to check Iran's theological influence in the region by knocking out the strongest secular state and helping establish even deeper ties between the Iranian and Iraqi mullahs wasn't quite the way to go, huh?

And considering how Rove slams polls later in his speech, this bit is truly neck-twisting logic of the most "Exorcist" kind

Rove said that Bush's likeability ratings are far higher than his approval ratings. "There is a disconnect" because of the Iraq conflict, Rove told the American Enterprise Institute.

Rove never makes any evidence for this spurious claim available, nor does he explain the supposed difference between "public approval" ratings and "personal likeability" ratings

Then again, since Rove's an obvious liar and notorious outer of at least one CIA Operative, maybe that nondisclosure isn't so surprising

And here come the Stuck On Stupid bits

Asked about criticism from some conservatives for his proposal for a guest worker program, Rove said, "This is about getting the right policy, and the politics will take care of themselves."

"I mean, we've seen this about four or five times before in American politics, and it's always seemed to work its way out politically, and I'm confident this will as well," Rove said.

Now I'm confused, Rove's talent is ONLY in the political side of the equation, NOT how the policy is developed and operated, and when someone so well-known for attention to detail like Rove says "the politics will take care of themselves", then it's obvious he's lost faith in his own abilities to deliver further GOP victories

And really, what else besides the most naive of optimism could account for Rove's metaphorical shoulder-shrug attitude of "it's always seemed to work its way out politically, and I'm confident this will as well"?

Does this sound like the GOP's top political strategist has any clue of how to stop what's looking more & more like a GOP massacre at the ballotbox come November? Does this sound like the hot buttons Rove confidently pushed in the past-Gay Bashing & Dems weak on National/Homeland Security-have any chance, logically, of repeating their past magic?

And there's no way Rove's talking about most citizens with this next word parsing, unless most citizens are extremely wealthy already

The presidential adviser, widely credited with securing Bush's win in 2000 and re-election in 2004, was questioned about public opinion polls that show the president's plunging approval ratings. A recent AP-Ipsos poll showed Bush approval at 33 percent. Other national polls put it around 30 percent.

"Well, you know, it's interesting, because consumer confidence is relatively high. In fact, it is much higher than the average of the last 40 years," said Rove, who argued that typically should lead to a gain of congressional seats for Republicans in November's midterm elections.

"Their personal circumstances are good. They're feeling good about where they are. They don't like gas prices. Who likes having to pay more at the pump? But they do feel that overall the economy is good for them, that the prospects for their family in the near term and for the future are good," Rove said of Americans.

Just WTF is Rove blabbing about here?

If Rove's REALLY arguing that the indicators are for a further GOP increase of seats in the House & the Senate, then he's doing nothing more than whistling past the political graveyard, fingers in ears repeating "lalalala lalalala, I'm not listening I'm not listening, lalalala lalalala" while the dead pull themselves out of their caskets & graves

Interesting, Rove's being either incredibly stupid, he's lying or he's arrogant, as there's no way the GOP is going to pick up seats in the current DC climate

And in the most entertaining aspect of Rove's appearance, he both blasts & praises polls at the same time

Rove accused the news media of being too fixated on polls.

"I love this mania which has swept through American media today which substitutes polls for coverage of substance," he said.

"There's, I'm sure, going to be a special Betty Ford addiction for those that are addicted to regular poll numbers, but you'll work your way through it," he said, referring to the former first lady's clinic for treating substance abuse.

***************************

He said that Bush's likeability, his personal approval ratings, were in the 60s in some polls. "Job approval is lower. And what that says to me is that people like him, they respect him, he's somebody they feel a connection with, but they're just sour right now on the war. And that's the way it's going to be."

So polls are bad, but polls Rove didn't identify source-wise, somehow mean that a lower job approval rating translates into MORE people liking & respecting a President doing his best Hindenburg Crash & Burn imitation?

While Rove may be worried about what's looking like an indictment or two coming his way regarding his traitorous outing of Valerie Plame, that alone can't account for this "detached from logical reality" speech today

The GOP's problems are much worse than thought before if this is the best stuff it's top political strategist & operative has to offer

Maybe for the GOP's sake, a Rove indictment might not be such a bad thing after all, but if it happens, watch for the most enjoyable schadenfreude as the hard right tear out their hair, wail and gnash their teeth in misery and anguish

A symphony for the ears & soul, truly
